The cheapest way to call India from the USA is a free app call (WhatsApp, Google Meet) when the person in India has a smartphone and decent data. When they don't, or you are calling a landline, a bank or an office, a pay-per-minute internet call is usually far cheaper than your US carrier's standard international rate. Dial 011 91 plus the 10-digit number, and check the per-minute rate before you start so there are no surprises.

The rest of this guide covers the details that trip people up: dialling formats for mobiles versus landlines, the time difference after the US clock change, why your Indian number won't work as caller ID from abroad, and how to keep paid calls predictable.

Free first: when WhatsApp or Meet is enough

Be realistic about free calls. If your parents, siblings and friends use WhatsApp every day and have stable 4G or home broadband, app calls cost you nothing extra and you should use them. Video is a bonus a phone call can't match.

App calls are the right choice when:

  • the person answers WhatsApp calls reliably
  • they have a data connection that holds up for the length of the call
  • you are calling a person, not an organisation

When you need a real phone call

There are plenty of situations where an app call doesn't work, and they tend to be the important ones:

  • Parents or grandparents on a basic phone, or who only answer the regular dialler.
  • Landlines. A family home phone, a doctor's clinic, a school, a lawyer's office. WhatsApp can't ring a landline.
  • Banks, insurers and government offices. Their phone menus expect a normal call and keypad tones.
  • Patchy data. In smaller towns and villages, mobile data can drop while the voice network still works. A normal call often sounds better than a breaking-up app call.
  • Urgency. A missed WhatsApp call is easy to ignore. A ringing phone is not.

For these, you are paying for the call to travel over the international phone network. The question is how much.

How to dial India from the US

India's country code is 91. The US exit code is 011. On a mobile, + replaces the exit code, so +91 works the same as 011 91. Every Indian number is 10 digits after the country code. Inside India people add a leading 0 for long-distance calls; you drop that 0 when calling from abroad (number format reference).

Indian mobile numbers

Mobile numbers are 10 digits and start with 6, 7, 8 or 9.

Written in India as Dial from a US landline Type on a smartphone
098XXX XXXXX 011 91 98XXX XXXXX +91 98XXX XXXXX
70XXX XXXXX 011 91 70XXX XXXXX +91 70XXX XXXXX

Indian landlines (STD codes)

Landlines combine an STD (city) code with a local number, and the two together always add up to 10 digits. Drop the 0 from the STD code.

City STD code in India From the US
Delhi 011 011 91 11 + 8-digit number
Mumbai 022 011 91 22 + 8-digit number
Chennai 044 011 91 44 + 8-digit number
Bengaluru 080 011 91 80 + 8-digit number

Smaller towns have longer STD codes and shorter local numbers. If you're unsure, the India calling code page and the step-by-step guide on how to call India have more examples.

Toll-free numbers: Indian 1800 numbers are designed for callers inside India and generally can't be reached from the US. Banks and airlines usually list a separate NRI or overseas number; use that one.

Time difference

India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 and India does not use daylight saving. The US does, so the gap changes twice a year:

US time zone Until 1 Nov 2026 (daylight time) From 1 Nov 2026 (standard time)
Eastern India is 9h 30m ahead India is 10h 30m ahead
Central 10h 30m ahead 11h 30m ahead
Pacific 12h 30m ahead 13h 30m ahead

An 8 pm call from New York lands at 5:30 am in India in summer and 6:30 am in winter. Early evening in the US is late night in India, so many families settle on US mornings instead: 8 am in New York is 5:30 pm in India during US daylight time and 6:30 pm after the clocks change.

The cheapest ways to call India from the USA, compared

Option Good for Things to know
WhatsApp / Meet Smartphone users with data Can't reach landlines or basic phones.
US carrier, no add-on Emergencies only Standard international rates on US plans are usually the most expensive way to call.
US carrier international add-on Daily calls to India from your mobile Monthly fee per add-on. Over Wi-Fi calling, AT&T bills by the number you dial, so the international rate still applies.
Calling apps Phone users who call often Need an app; check inactivity rules and what caller ID shows.
Browser calling Calls from a laptop, landlines, offices Nothing to install; prepaid per-minute pricing.

Rates to India differ between mobile and landline numbers and change from time to time. That is why this guide doesn't print a figure that might be out of date next week. You can check the current per-minute rate to India for both line types before you call.

Calling India from your laptop

If you already spend your evenings at a computer, you can call India from the browser without installing anything (how browser calling works). EzyRing works this way: you type the number, the dialer shows the per-minute rate for that exact number before you call, and you see the running cost while you talk. Credit is prepaid, there's no subscription, and the call ends before your balance runs out, so a long chat with your parents can't turn into a surprise bill. Credit doesn't expire, which suits families who call in bursts around festivals, exams or a family emergency.

Making the call recognisable: show your US number

Many people in India don't answer international numbers they don't recognise, and with good reason: scam calls from abroad are common. India's Department of Telecommunications has told carriers to tag calls from outside India as "International Call", so your family may see that label whatever number you call from. What helps is that the number is one they have saved.

Two points worth knowing:

  1. Use your US number, not your old Indian one. Since October 2024, India's International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System blocks international calls that display an Indian +91 number. Indian SIMs genuinely roaming abroad are checked and let through, but an internet call placed from the US that shows your Indian number will likely be blocked, even though the number is yours.
  2. Verified caller ID shows the number they saved. With verified caller ID, you prove you own your US mobile number once (you receive a short call and key in a code), and your browser calls go out showing it. Cross-border calls usually display it; how it appears ultimately depends on the Indian carrier. Ask your family to save it under your name.

A setup that keeps costs low

  • Use WhatsApp for the relatives who answer it.
  • For landlines, basic phones, banks and offices, use a pay-per-minute call and check the rate before you dial.
  • Save every Indian number in +91 format so you never have to think about the 0 again.
  • Start small. With prepaid credit you can sign up and add $5, make a test call to your family, and see what it costs in practice before adding more.

Frequently asked questions

How do I dial an Indian mobile number from the US?

Dial 011 (the US exit code), then 91 (India's country code), then the 10-digit mobile number without any leading 0. Indian mobile numbers start with 6, 7, 8 or 9. From a smartphone you can type +91 followed by the 10 digits instead of 011 91.

How do I call an Indian landline from the US?

Dial 011 91, then the STD (city) code without its leading 0, then the local number. For a Mumbai landline written 022 1234 5678, dial 011 91 22 1234 5678. Together the city code and local number always make 10 digits.

What is the time difference between the US and India?

India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 all year and India does not change its clocks. While US Eastern Time is on daylight saving, India is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead; after US clocks go back on 1 November 2026 the gap becomes 10 hours 30 minutes.

Can I call India showing my Indian mobile number while I'm in the US?

Usually not. Since October 2024 India's Department of Telecommunications blocks incoming international calls that display an Indian +91 number, because scammers abroad used them. Use your US number as caller ID instead; cross-border calls normally display it.

Are Indian toll-free 1800 numbers reachable from the US?

Generally not. Indian toll-free numbers are meant for domestic callers. Banks and airlines usually publish a separate number for NRIs or overseas customers, often a regular +91 number. Look for it on their contact page.
