Cheapest Way to Call Pakistan From Abroad
App calls are free when they work, but many calls home to Pakistan need a normal line. Dialling 03xx mobiles and landlines, exit codes from the UK, US and Gulf, and cost tips.

The cheapest way to call Pakistan is a WhatsApp or other app call when the person you're calling has a smartphone and a working data connection. When they don't, or the call needs to reach a landline, an older relative's basic phone or an office, a prepaid internet call billed per minute is usually much cheaper than your mobile network's standard international rate. To dial, use +92 and drop the leading 0: a mobile written 0300-1234567 becomes +92 300 1234567.
Below: when app calls are good enough, exact dialling formats for mobiles and city landlines, exit codes from the UK, US and Gulf, time differences, and how to make sure your family actually picks up.
Free app calls vs normal calls: when each works
For many families the daily call home is already a WhatsApp call, and if that works for you, keep using it. App calls are free beyond data, video is included, and voice notes fill the gaps between calls.
App calls stop working well when:
- Data is weak or expensive at the other end. In some areas the voice network holds up better than mobile data, and a normal call sounds clearer than a breaking app call.
- The person uses a basic phone, or is an elderly parent who only answers the regular ringtone.
- You're calling a landline: a family home phone, a school, a hospital department, a lawyer, a bank branch.
- You need to get through a phone menu, which expects keypad tones from a normal call.
- The call is urgent. A missed WhatsApp call is easy to overlook; a ringing phone is not.
In those cases you need a call that reaches the Pakistani phone network, which is a paid call. The aim is to keep it cheap and predictable.
How to dial Pakistan: +92 and dropping the 0
Pakistan's country code is 92. Mobile numbers are 10 digits once the leading 0 is dropped; landline numbers are a city code plus a local number whose length depends on the city. Inside Pakistan people dial a 0 first (the trunk prefix); from abroad you replace it with +92.
Mobile numbers (03xx)
Mobiles are written 03XX-XXXXXXX. The digits after 03 identify the operator.
| Written in Pakistan | International format |
|---|---|
| 0300-1234567 | +92 300 1234567 |
| 0345-1234567 | +92 345 1234567 |
The most common mistake is dialling +92 0300…. The 0 must go.
Landlines and city codes
Landline numbers start with a city code. Big cities have short codes and longer local numbers; smaller places have longer codes and shorter local numbers.
| City | Code in Pakistan | From abroad |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi | 021 | +92 21 + 8-digit local number |
| Lahore | 042 | +92 42 + 8-digit local number |
| Islamabad / Rawalpindi | 051 | +92 51 + local number |
| Faisalabad | 041 | +92 41 + local number |
| Peshawar | 091 | +92 91 + local number |
| Multan | 061 | +92 61 + local number |
| Quetta | 081 | +92 81 + local number |
A Karachi number written 021-3456-7890 becomes +92 21 3456 7890. Don't pad or trim the local part; dial every digit after the city code exactly as written.

Calling from the UK, US and Gulf: exit codes and time differences
If you dial from a landline, or a phone that doesn't accept +, start with your country's exit code. On smartphones and browser dialers, + works everywhere.
| Calling from | Exit code | Mobile example | Pakistan time vs yours |
|---|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | 00 | 00 92 300 1234567 | +4h until 25 Oct 2026, then +5h |
| United States (Eastern) | 011 | 011 92 300 1234567 | +9h until 1 Nov 2026, then +10h |
| UAE | 00 | 00 92 300 1234567 | +1h |
| Saudi Arabia / Qatar | 00 | 00 92 300 1234567 | +2h |
Pakistan Standard Time is UTC+5 with no daylight saving, so the gap only shifts when your own clocks change. A 7 pm call from London is 11 pm in Lahore in summer and midnight in winter, which is why many UK families call in the early evening UK time or at weekends.
A note for the Gulf: in the UAE, consumer internet calling is restricted to licensed services, and WhatsApp and FaceTime calls are still blocked for most users. Check what works on your connection before relying on any internet calling service, browser-based ones included.
Checking the live rate before you call
Rates to Pakistan differ between mobiles and landlines and change as carrier prices move, so any figure printed in a blog post would go stale. Before you call, check the current rate to Pakistan for the line type you need, or compare it with other countries on the full rate table.
Some ways to keep the bill down:
- Use app calls for the people who answer them, and paid calls only where they're needed.
- Avoid your mobile network's default international rate. On many plans it's the most expensive option unless you've added an international bundle. Wi-Fi calling doesn't change this: carriers such as AT&T bill Wi-Fi calls by the number dialled, so a call to Pakistan is still international.
- Prefer prepaid for occasional calls. A monthly bundle makes sense if you call every day. If you call a few times a month, or in bursts around Eid, weddings or illness in the family, prepaid credit that doesn't expire avoids paying for minutes you don't use.
If you'd rather call from your laptop, you can call Pakistan from the browser. With EzyRing there's nothing to install (here's what happens behind a browser call), the per-minute rate appears before you dial, you see the running cost during the call, and the call ends before your credit runs out, so there's no bill shock.
Making sure family recognise the call
As in most countries, plenty of people in Pakistan don't answer numbers they haven't saved, especially international ones. A few things help:
- Don't use your old Pakistani SIM number as caller ID from abroad. The PTA has long hunted grey traffic, international calls disguised with local numbers, and a +92 number arriving on an international route fits that pattern. It may be blocked or show oddly.
- Show the number of the country you live in. A UK, US or Gulf mobile number arriving on an international call is normal and usually displays as sent. With verified caller ID you prove once that you own that number (you get a short call and key in a code), and browser calls go out showing it. How it appears depends on the recipient's carrier.
- Ask family to save the number under your name. Then they see "Bilal UK" instead of a string of digits, and if they call back, it rings your normal phone.
- Agree a regular time. A Sunday-afternoon call that everyone expects gets answered.
A simple setup
- WhatsApp for the relatives who use it reliably.
- A prepaid, pay-per-minute option for landlines, basic phones, offices and bad-data days.
- Every Pakistani number saved as
+92 3XX XXXXXXXor+92 [city code] [number]. - Your own number as caller ID, saved in your family's phones.
To try it, you can sign up, add $5 and make a test call home to see the cost and call quality before deciding on anything bigger.
Frequently asked questions
How do I dial a Pakistani mobile number from abroad?
Pakistani mobiles are written 03XX-XXXXXXX. Drop the leading 0 and add +92, so 0300-1234567 becomes +92 300 1234567. From a UK or Gulf landline dial 00 92 300 1234567; from a US landline dial 011 92 300 1234567.
How do I call a landline in Karachi or Lahore from abroad?
Dial +92, then the city code without its 0, then the local number. Karachi is 21, Lahore 42 and Islamabad/Rawalpindi 51. Karachi and Lahore local numbers have 8 digits; copy other numbers exactly as written, minus the leading 0. A Lahore number written 042-1234-5678 becomes +92 42 1234 5678.
What is the time difference between the UK and Pakistan?
Pakistan Standard Time is UTC+5 and Pakistan doesn't change its clocks. Pakistan is 4 hours ahead of the UK during British Summer Time and 5 hours ahead after UK clocks go back on 25 October 2026.
Can I show my Pakistani number when calling Pakistan from abroad?
It's not a good idea. Pakistan's regulator has long fought grey traffic (international calls disguised with local numbers), so a +92 number arriving from abroad may be blocked or displayed oddly. Show the number of the country you live in, such as your UK or US mobile, and ask family to save it.
Is it cheaper to call Pakistani landlines or mobiles?
It varies, and rates change over time. Check the current per-minute rate for both line types before you call rather than assuming one is cheaper.
