What it's about
The narrator is a couple of months into healing. She's in therapy and doing better, and that's when the phone lights up in the small hours with no name and no number. She knows who it is anyway.
The song turns on the gap between what the screen hides and what she knows. The hidden number is supposed to make him unrecognisable, but it gives him away. Only someone who knows he'd be ignored would bother hiding. The caller isn't checking she's okay. He calls because she's okay, and he wants back in.

How to stop the 3 a.m. calls
iPhone
- iOS 26: Settings > Apps > Phone > Screen Unknown Callers > Silence (straight to voicemail) or Ask Reason for Calling (the caller has to say who they are before your phone rings).
- iOS 18: Settings > Apps > Phone > Silence Unknown Callers.
- Overnight: a Sleep Focus or Do Not Disturb that only allows calls from Favourites.
Android
- Pixel: Phone > Settings > Blocked numbers > Unknown on.
- Samsung: Phone > Settings > Block numbers > Block unknown/private numbers on.

Close the other doors too
People who hide their number usually try other routes as well. If you've decided on no contact:
- Block the contact on iPhone, not just the number. On iPhone, blocking a contact stops their calls, Messages and FaceTime at once.
- Turn on Filter Unknown Senders in Settings > Apps > Messages (Settings > Messages on older iOS), so texts from new numbers go to a separate list.
- Block them in WhatsApp, Instagram and other apps. Phone blocking doesn't carry over to apps.
- Use a Sleep Focus that only lets your Favourites through, so a new number can't wake you at 3 a.m.
If it's harassment
Repeated hidden calls after you've made clear you don't want contact can count as harassment in many places. Keep a log of dates and times, save any voicemails, and contact the police. Hiding a number for good reasons
Hiding a number isn't always manipulative. Doctors calling from personal phones, people leaving abusive relationships, and anyone calling a stranger about a sale or a rental have good reasons to keep a personal number private.
